Laurel Saiz, associate professor of journalism at Onondaga Community College, has more than 30 years of experience in journalism and writing. A former beat reporter for The (Syracuse) Post-Standard, Saiz also was associate editor of Syracuse University's alumni magazine, community relations coordinator for Syracuse Stage, and executive director of the local chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union. Saiz has taught Plain Language writing workshops for a number of different agencies, associations and programs. She served as a drama critic for The Post-Standard for three years, winning two Syracuse Press Club Professional Recognition Awards for her work. She is an officer and member of the Board of Directors of the Syracuse Press Club.
Her free-lance writing work includes the Onondaga Citizens League, the Syracuse Chapter of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt, local political campaigns and many more organizations. She has a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism from Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications and a master's in public administration from SU's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
A native of the New York City metropolitan area, Saiz has attended a number of original Broadway cast productions and many performances of such dance companies as the New York City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, Joffrey Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem and more.
