David Feldman was the founding artistic director of Armory Square Playhouse and its predecessor, the Contemporary Theater of Syracuse New Plays Program, both of which he led for a total of 23 years. Now 25, the organization is one of the longest continuously operating play development programs in the country. Feldman’s own plays have been produced inLos Angeles,Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Boston area, Rochester,IthacaandSyracuse.
As a theater critic, Feldman's credits include the Syracuse New Times, WONO-FM, Syracuse Guide magazine and Stages, a national theater magazine. He also did theater commentary for WCNY-TV in Central New York. He won five awards for theater criticism from the Syracuse Press Club, including the first such award ever given by the organization.
Feldman is currently Professor Emeritus of English and Journalism atOnondagaCommunity College,where he created and was director of the college’s Journalism Minor. He has also taught drama at Syracuse Universityand directed script-writing workshops at the Downtown Writers Center, in Syracuse.
Feldman holds an AB from SUNY Albany, an MA from Syracuse Universityand an MFA fromBrandeisUniversity, where he studied playwriting under Miracle Worker author William Gibson and theater criticism under Louis Kronenberger. He also studied script writing with Romulus Linney at Ensemble Theatre Company, and has been an Arts Auditor for the NY State Council on the Arts.
His personal interests include driving a 12 year old Mazda Miata (previous sports cars: the first series Mustang, Triumph TR 4-A, Sunbeam Alpine and a Fiat 124 Spyder) and making sure that the goldfish in his backyard pond make it through the rough Syracuse winters.
